Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas mark 7
Cream together the sugar, margarine and vanilla. Stir in the flour and salt. (If the dough is dry, mix in 3 to 4 tablespoons milk). Shape into a roll, about 2 inches in diameter. Roll in the chopped pecans. Wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours. Cut roll into 1/8 inch slices. Place 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking tray. Bake until light brown, approx. 8 - 10 minutes. Remove from the baking tray immediately. Makes about 6 dozen
